The Schladming–Dachstein region is one of the most popular ski destinations in the Alps, featuring the famous Schladming 4-Mountain ski area.
The term ‘4-Mountain’ is meant literally: it refers to four separate yet fully interconnected ski mountains, offering more than 120 kilometers of continuous slopes. Skiers can easily traverse from one mountain to another in a single day.
1. Hauser Kaibling – the highest peak
At 2,015 meters above sea level, Hauser Kaibling is the highest point of the ski region. The slopes start above the town of Haus im Ennstal. Blue runs offer easy skiing for beginners, while the red and black pistes provide exciting challenges for advanced skiers, making this area ideal for both families and professionals.
In addition to its modern lifts and stunning panoramic views, Hauser Kaibling’s highlight is the Kaibling XXL Funslope, stretching nearly 1.4 kilometers with turns, waves, tunnels, and small jumps. This unique course combines elements of traditional ski slopes and snowparks, making it a must-try for both children and adults.
2. Planai – Schladming’s “home mountain”
Planai is the most famous mountain of Schladming and is often referred to as the “heart” of the region. Its modern lift system (the gondola starts right from the town center), wide slopes, and cozy alpine huts make it a perfect choice for everyone.
Planai is not only known for its excellent pistes but also for its special attractions, such as the musical slope and the timed race course. Beginners and children are also well taken care of, with covered magic carpets providing a safe environment for learning the first turns.
This is also where you’ll find the famous Planai World Cup course, which hosts the world-renowned Night Race slalom event every year, attracting thousands of spectators.
3. Hochwurzen – night skiing and tobogganing
Hochwurzen is home to one of Austria’s longest night skiing slopes. The 3-kilometer illuminated run offers a magical atmosphere that everyone should experience at least once.
It’s also a perfect destination for families, thanks to its 7-kilometer toboggan run, an unforgettable adventure for both kids and adults. You can reach the summit comfortably by lift, and sleds are available for rent right at the valley station.
4. Reiteralm – family-friendly atmosphere
Reiteralm offers a wide variety of slopes for all difficulty levels. The resort’s modern facilities include a fun park, half-pipe, carving slope, free speed check area, mogul slope, ski school, ski kindergarten, and childcare services, ensuring that every member of the family can enjoy their time on the mountain.
Most of the blue slopes can be found on Hauser Kaibling and Reiteralm.
All four mountains have red slopes, with a total of 68.4 km of pistes to explore.
There are 8.3 km of black slopes in this ski area. Hochwurzen does not have any black slopes! The longest black run is on Hauser Kaibling.
From the red slopes of Planai, you can enjoy stunning views of the Ramsau plateau and the towering Dachstein behind it.
The peaks are connected by multiple lifts, gondolas, and ski lifts, so you can easily ski from one mountain to another without taking off your skis.
It is this connectivity and the variety of terrain that make Schladming one of the most popular ski destinations in the Alps—whether for families, beginners, or professional skiers. The ski area is part of Ski Amadé, one of the largest interconnected ski regions in Europe.
